Pregnancy apps, birthing classes, and wellness influencers all recommend "meditation" and "mindfulness." But what do these terms mean? Are they compatible with Catholic faith? And what makes Catholic meditation different?
Defining Terms
Secular Mindfulness
Modern mindfulness typically derives from Buddhist Vipassana meditation, adapted for Western secular use. Key features:
- Focus on the present moment without judgment
- Observation of thoughts without attachment
- Awareness of bodily sensations and breath
- Non-religious framing to be accessible to all
The goal is psychological wellbeing: reduced stress, greater calm, improved mental health.
